This is a rugged landscape of granite tors and grassy fields of weathered erratics, so different from the Snowy River Valleys with its lakes and diverse flora. The weather is closing in as the afternoon wears on, with low cloud drifting along the higher ridges. I'm strolling around North Rams Head, that black cathedral of rock that dominates the Eastern view from anywhere on the Main Range. Granite abounds here in huge vertical slabs and I'm dwarfed by its immensity. Foreboding and silent they stand, their crusted surface of lichen a testament to their age, the wind their voice. A wild and desolate place this, no artifical distractions a place where you can think. I've already been here an hour wandering across grassy fields from tor to tor. North Rams Head dipping out of view in the valleys only to loom larger and more menacing with each ridge ascended. I stop at a collapsed tor, lichen crusted granite at all angles. The wind howls through the granite, moist fingers playing with the edges of my jacket. Scrambling down there's a view through angled tors over boulder strewn fields to another granite humped ridge and beyond to another. Cloud is getting lower, darker, setting the mood. I setup the camera and wait, the wind still whispering, granite immovable, the feeling of isolation strong. The sun tries to break the gloom and partially succeeds, I make an image, it begins to weaken and fails. The moment passes and I resume my walk drawn to the imposing Rams Head.
