The Garuda or Krut (ครุฑ) in Thai is a large mythical bird-like being present in both Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. Their exact size is not clear, but their wings are said to span for many miles. In Thailand which follows the Theravada school of Buddhism Garudas are highly intelligent and socially organised large predatory birds. They are enemies of the Nāgas, intelligent serpent like beings. As with Nāgas they are a culmination of many animas as well as divine beings. They are considered to be among the lowest devas. Garudas belong to kingdoms with cities, and some have the ability to transform themselves into humans and have been known to have relationships with human women. They are said to live in simbalī (silk-cotton trees), and among several beings appointed by Sakra to defend Mout Sumeru from the asuras. In the Mahasamyatta Sutta Budda is shown making a temporary truce between the Nāgas and Garudas.
