G20 Meltdown had organised a 'carnival against capitalism', with four marches each led by one of four 'Horsefolk of the Apocalypse' to converge on the Bank of England for a 'Banquet at the Bank'. It was intended as a huge piece of street theatre, but the police had treated the 'Financial Fools Day' plans as a serious attempt at terrorist insurrection that would bring the capital to its knees and had built up the event through leaks and interviews with the press suggesting there would be an alarming level of violence - and psyched up its own paramilitary wing, the TSG, to oppose it. People gathered around the Black Horse "against land enclosures and borders" at Cannon Street station, appropriately as this was the 360th anniversary of and important event in British history, the Diggers occupation of land at St Georges Hill in Surrey. But before the horse could start on its march to Bank, the3 anarchists present decided to move off. They were stopped by police but surged down a side street and I followed them as they made their way by a rather roundabout route to Bank. From there I went towards London Bridge to meet the Silver Horse against financial crimes, which was accompanied by perhaps fifteen hundred demonstrators in a rather more mixed and colourful procession, and joined them to go back to Bank, where I met up with the Black Horse again. The Bank area was very crowded, and police were already beginning to push people around and to pen them in. I decided I wanted to leave and was able to pass through a police line using my press card, although later journalists were also "kettled."
