Helmsley is a market town and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the River Rye, at the junction of the A170 and the B1257 and both the Cleveland Way and Ebor Way begin here. The town sits on the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park which passes through Helmsley along the A170 road - the western part of the town is therefore within the National Park. It is in fact, the only market town in the North York Moors National Park! Helmsley is full of history - there are 51 listed buildings (including the12th century ruins of Helmsley Castle with Tudor Manor in the care of English Heritage and the Duncombe Park Estate). In 2015 it was crowned best market town high street in Britain. Dating back to the 15th century, The Black Swan Hotel (a boutique hotel) is Grade 2 listed and was once a traditional coaching inn. It comprises three houses; a black and white, late C16, Tudor house on the left of the terrace, an early C19 house in the middle, and an early C18 building on the right. This photo is of the early C18 section. The painted wooden model of a black swan, hangs on a decorated wrought-iron bracket.
