A gold-tipped CdSe/CdS nanorod that is covered with Au nanoparticles: Z-contrast image measured by HAADF mode in Scanning TEM (115 x 95nm). An annular dark field image formed only by very high angle, incoherently scattered electrons is highly sensitive to variations in the atomic number of atoms in the sample (Z-contrast images). This technique is also known as high-angle annular dark-field imaging (HAADF). In nanotechnology, nanorods are one morphology of nanoscale objects. Each of their dimensions range from 1-100 nm. They may be synthesized from metals or semiconducting materials. Nanorods are produced by direct chemical synthesis. Nanoparticles are particles between 1 and 100 nanometers in size. In nanotechnology, a particle is defined as a small object that behaves as a whole unit with respect to its transport and properties. Particles are further classified according to diameter. Nanoparticle research is currently an area of intense scientific interest due to a wide variety of potential applications in biomedical, optical and electronic fields. Nanotechnology (nanotech) is the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale.
