British or European otter, (Lutra Lutra). KEY FACTS. Origin: Native. Size: Head/body length: 60-120cm: tail, 40-45cm. Habitat: Coasts, estuaries and in fresh water habitats with suitable cover. Young, 1-6, average, 2-3. Gestation: 61-74 days. Diet: all kinds of fish. Will also take rabbits, frogs, ducks and snakes. Life span: 9-10 years. The otter is a large member of the weasel family with an amphibious lifestyle. In the wild they are elusive, secretive animals living in undisturbed river, streams and estuaries. In the 1960's they were on the verge of extinction. Now with full legal protection, cleaner rivers and managed habitat it is returning to former haunts, though its distribution will always be limited by the availability of fish.
