Saint Martin is a tropical island in the northeast Caribbean, approximately 300 km east of Puerto Rico. The 87 km² island is divided roughly in half between France (53 km²) and the Netherlands Antilles (34 km²). The southern Dutch half comprises the Eilandgebied Sint Maarten (Island area of St. Martin) and is part of the Netherlands Antilles. The northern French half comprises the Collectivité de Saint-Martin is an overseas collectivity of France. Philipsburg is the capital on the Dutch side of this Caribbean isle with approximately 1, 300 residents Marigot is the capital on the French side with approximately 5, 700 residents. The total number of residents on the isle is around the 35, 000 people, but sometimes the island can seem to be more crowded due to the mass tourism on which the economy heavily relies.
