A single lioness lies in the short grass on a small hill inside the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. She is enjoying the early morning sun after an evening that might have been a busy one, full of events. By the look of her relaxed demeanor one could expect that it was a successful evening of hunting. The other female lions, and possibly male lions of the pack will be not to far away from her, as they lie and rest while also scanning the lowlands, constantly aware of the movement of all the other animals in the area. The Ngorongoro Crater is actually a caldera, created by an imploding volcano inside the Rift Valley of East Africa. This massive bowl of land, encircled by high cliffs is a spectacular area filled with wildlife that prefer to avoid the big migration of wildebeest and Zebra. The migration's most southern point lies just to the north of this area, in the lowlands which flow in to the Serengeti National Park.
