A light was first established on the headland of Start Point, jutting out into the English Channel and close to the Skerries Bank, in 1836 with the building of this imposing 92 ft (28 m) stone tower, with a castellated balcony, shows a flashing white light with a range of 25 miles (40 km). 23 ft (7 m) below the main light is a window that shows a fixed red light, with a range of 12 miles (19 km), which marks the Skerries Bank. The lighthouse was automated in 1993, and the lighthouse keepers withdrawn, however a caretaker still resides at the station - opening the lighthouse to visitors on certain days during the summer season. The other housekeeper cottages are available as holiday lets.
