Egg Castle was built by the Normans on the small island of Megaride 1, 000 years ago. Legend states that the siren Parthenope, having failed to seduce Ulysses with her song, threw herself overboard and came ashore here. The island was the site of the Greeks’ first colony in the Bay of Naples in the 5th century BC and the home of the exiled last Roman emperor, Romulus Augustulus, in 476 AD after the fall of Rome to the Goths. The poet Virgil was said to have placed an egg inside a glass container inside a metal cage deep within the castle (impossibly, 1, 000 years before the castle was actually built); if the egg was broken, Naples would be destroyed. Hence, Castel dell’Ovo. In the 14th century, after a storm wrecked the castle, Queen Joan admitted that the egg had indeed broken but she had replaced it using Virgil’s rituals; a true politician. The fortress contains a museum of prehistoric tools, fossils and ceramics. Also on the island are fish restaurants, bars and a small marina.
