Lord Hopton’s Regiment of Foote, an English Civil War re-enactment group, dramatises the siege and fall of Corfe Castle, which took place during 1645-1646. The members of the group assemble together regularly from all parts of the country to put on these colourful displays. This civil war enthusiast is acting the role of Colonel Anketill who was the Governor of Corfe Castle and commander of the defending Royalist forces at the time of the siege. Colonel Anketill was brought in from Somerset to do the job. As an outsider, he would have been unencumbered by personal relationships, friendships and loyalties among the local people and so was better able to make the difficult decisions and issue the necessary orders for the effective defence of the castle. For example one of the measures taken by the defenders was the demolition of houses and buildings in the village around the castle to deny cover and shelter to the besieging forces. Even the rubble would have been removed and brought inside the castle to prevent it from being of use to the enemy.
