One of the biggest shoe factories standing unused is the former GT Hawkins building in Overstone Road. The former factory sparked a major panic in September 2007 when builders working inside it feared it could collapse. But the building was made safe and its owner, developer Colin Clayson, confirmed he was still planning to convert it into flats. The former shoe factory dates from the 1870s. It finally closed its doors after 120 years of trading, in 1995, and has been empty ever since. At its peak, GT Hawkins was well known as a boot maker to the Queen and in 1982, the firm's footwear was used by British troops in the Falklands.
