The Uspallata Pass links the Argentinian wine-growing city of Mendoza with the Chilean capital, Santiago. It has been used since Inca and Spanish Colonial times as an east-west routeway over the Andes. In 1817 the pass was used by San Martin's Army of the Andes in a campaign to free Chile and ultimately Peru from Spanish Colonial Rule. Here we see Argentine traffic, entering Chile, at the border post near the summit of the pass at 3000m. Getting through may take up to three hours. Passports, immigration forms and luggage are all checked. The Argentine-Chile Border is 200km west of Mendoza and 141km from Santiago and bus travel time between the two takes 6-9 hours. This shot was taken on the Chilean side of the border post the Thursday before Easter, when people were travelling to holiday destinations.
