Dubai — Derrick Mein nudged clear of defending champion Gebben Miles, while their American teammate Joey Bolton stayed within striking distance at the end of the second day of the Nad Al Sheba Desert Shooting Competition on Thursday. Gebben Miles, who was overnight leader, had to step aside for Derrick Mein to occupy the leaderboard with scores of 42 and 47 for a total of 89 from a possible 100. Miles slipped down by a spot as he added a second round of 40 to his overnight 48 for a total of 88 to remain within striking distance. In third place was Joey Bolton as he came up with a round of 44 in addition to his first round of 43 on Wednesday, and the American was joined by Hungary’s Andras Szerdahelyl after he too ended two days of shooting with 87. American world champion Anthony Matarese, who had claimed the third place behind Gebben Miles and Spain’s Jose Manuel Rodriguez last year, got his campaign back on track with a solid second round of 47 to go along with his 33 from first day. Meanwhile, in the women’s competition overnight leader Carolyn Smith of the USA was knocked off her perch by Sweden’s Anna Jarnald who went on to consolidate her position at the top with a five-point lead from the chasing pack. Jarnald shot a second round of 32 to add on to his opening round of 44 for a total of 76. The leader from Sweden is being pursued by Great Britain’s Cheryl Hall and France’s Aurore Logghe with identical totals of 71, while a couple of British shooters, Emma Nelson and Katie Brown, completed the top five with totals of 70. The top 25 finishers in the men’s section stand to earn a total of $675, 000 while the women have a total prize fund of $200, 000.
