THE VIRGINIA CREEPER AT ST JOHNS COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE WHICH HAS TURNED RED IN TIME FOR THE FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN TODAY (SAT 22 SEPT). Britain's countryside is turning into a kaleidoscope of colours on the first day of Autumn today (Sat)Bright orange, red, yellow and purple trees are now warming up the UK's streets and parks with the arrival of the Autumn equinox as days get colder and the nights get longer. One of the colleges at Cambridge University, which is covered in Virginia Creeper, has already become a spectacular blaze of red.The ivy completely covers the back of the building at St John's College and is one of the most famous autumn sights in Cambridge as the leaves change from green to scarlet.Three quarters of the creeper, which covers New Court, has been transformed into splendid shades of crimson and scarlet. The glorious spectacle has been attracting tourists from all over the world, who have been stopping to have their photos taken in front of the red and green foliage. In some places the vine, which climbs 10 metres high to the top of the four-storey building, is so thick it completely covers the windows."The red ivy looks stunning and makes it feel as though autumn has really arrived, " said Helen Ayres, 36, from Cambridge.Experts at the Woodland Trust say the tinting autumn leaves will be more intense this year because of Britain's current mild weather."If the mild weather continues the autumn colours should be good this year as a mix of sunny days and cold nights concentrates the sugar in the leaves and gives a more intense colour, " said Dr Kate Lewthwaite, manager for the Trust's Nature's Calendar Project.
