The city centre of York is notable for, among other things, a network of old back alleys that thread their way between, behind, and sometimes beneath buildings, providing an intimate way of experiencing on foot the city centre's medieval past. Or, alternatively, a short cut between the centre's major streets that avoids the tourist throng. In 1983, a local journalist, Mark Jones, described the footpaths as "snickelways", a word he coined derived from "snicket", "ginnel" and alleyway", all of which denote a narrow path or passage used as a walking route. Very popular with town planners and psychogeographers. [Ref: "A Walk around the Snickelways of York", by Mark Jones, 1983]
