The home of Captain Cook, who discovered Australia in 1770, is located in Fitzroy Gardens in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The cottage is known as ‘Cook’s cottage’ and was built entirely of North Yorkshire stone in England. The cottage was built in 1755 and owned and lived in by James’s parents, James and Grace Cook. It was in 1933 when Australian philanthropist Sir Russell Grimwade learned that the cottage in the village of Great Ayton was to be demolished for road widening. Sir Russell Grimwade offered to purchase the property for £800 in 1934, and also paid for its removal to Australia costing a further £1, 500. Its bricks were individually numbered, packed in wooden barrels and shipped to Melbourne. On arrival, the numbered bricks were placed back together, in time for the celebrations of Melbourne’s century of European settlement.
