Glasgow-based Turner Prize nominee Ciara Phillips has converted the MV Fingal, which dates back to 1963, into a modern-day “Dazzle Ship” in Leith Docks. The Leith Dazzle Ship, which was unveiled in May 2016 and is on display during the Edinburgh Art Festival follows similar projects in Liverpool and London which artists have worked on as part of the UK’s official cultural programme to mark the war centenary. Fingal was commissioned by the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) in 1963 and was the last ship to be built by the Blythswood Shipbuilding Company in Glasgow. Registered in Leith, she was stationed for 30 years in Oban and then for 6 years in Stromness, ferrying lighthouse keepers, essential supplies and maintenance staff to lighthouses, as well as undertaking repairs to navigational aids throughout the West Coast and the North of Scotland. Fingal retired from NLB service in 2000. Fingal, the luxury floating hotel, opened to the public in January 2019.
