With the construction of the church in the 14th century, the Greeks dedicated the building to their patron saint, Demetrius of Thessaloniki. The small temple is located on Quarantine hill, in the region of the Genoese fortress (previously called Caffa, and now the old town of Feodosiya). The Greek Church has a simple rectangular shape with no plaster on the outside, but inside are ancient frescoes that have adorned the shrine since its construction. Unfortunately time has not been kind to the frescoes and the interior currently requires expensive restoration. A team of restorators from UNESCO have recently been engaged to preserve and repair some of the magnificent frescoes painted by the Greek icon painters and preserved until now. The church is currently a candidate for a World Heritage listing protected by UNESCO.
