Different coloured granite cobbles (technically 'setts' or 'sets') are used to create the circular pattern with points of the compass surrounding the old bull ring in Kelso market square, Scottish Borders. The square is the largest town square in the whole of Scotland, and has a distinct continental look with buildings in French, Venetian, Dutch, German and classical styles. This dates from its rebuilding at the end of the 18th century following a major fire in the town, with later additions carefully blended into the architectural environment. Bulls are no longer sold in the market square, but livestock sales remain important to the Border town which hosts the Border Union Showground, a National Hunt racecourse and is the economic hub of the eastern Border with high value fishing on the Tweed and some of the best course courses in Scotland.
