THE HAMLET OF WYCOLLER and the surrounding area has long been associated with the Bronte sisters with Wycoller hall and its setting be the basis for Ferndean Manor in Jane Eyre. WYCOLLER HALL was abandoned as a residence after the death of the last Squire, Henry Owen Cunliffe in 1818 and is now a ruin. It was originally a 16th Century country house extended in 1774 by Squire Cunliffe seeking to attract a wealthy wife. THE PACKHORSE BRIDGE is a fascinating two arched construction which is thought to have been built in the 14th century and appears to be in a a precarious state because of its leaning arch, but for centuries it has withstood the constant traffic of man and packhorse and remains solid to this day. THE CLAPPER BRIDGE consists of three slabs of stone which rest on two piers and could possibly be 1000 years old.
