Weitere Informationen:
A Milecastle was a small fort placed at intervals of approximately one Roman Mile along several major Roman frontiers. On Hadrian's Wall the majority form a guarded gateway through the wall. There were 80 of these along the Wall. It is estimated that each had a garrison of 20-30 Auxiliary soldiers in two barrack blocks. The garrison controlled the passage of people, goods and livestock through the wall. It is likely that they also acted as customs posts. The gates of Milecastle 42 are of exceptionally big and strong masonry and were possibly built by the Second Legion, their trade mark being strong and massive masonry.
