Memorial to Fumiko Hayashida at the Story Wall - Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial - Bainbridge Island, Kitsap County, Washington, USA. Hayashida died on November 2, 2014 at the age of 103. She was the subject of an iconic Seattle Post-Intelligencer photograph which shows her holding her sleeping baby daughter, Natalie, while waiting to board a ferry from Bainbridge Island to the mainland with other Japanese American internees. The Memorial is located on the site of the former Eagledale ferry dock on Bainbridge Island, Washington, on March 30, 1942, two hundred twenty–seven men, women and children were forcibly removed from their homes, rounded up by US Army soldiers armed with rifles fixed with bayonets and boarded a ferry to Seattle.
