The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe, by Bill Reid, provides the focal point to the entrance of the International Terminal. The bronze sculpture features legendary Haida creatures paddling a boat that "goes on, forever anchored in the same place." The sculpture was first created in 1986 as a 1/6-scale clay maquette and enlarged to a full-scale clay model in 1988. In 1989, a mold was taken from the full-scale model and the sculpture was cast in plaster for further refinement. Later that year, the plaster pattern was completed and sent to the Tallix Foundry in New York. The finished sculpture is approximately six meters long (20 feet), four meters high (13 feet) and 3.5 metres wide (11 feet). The first bronze casting was completed in 1991 and is (now) on display in the Canadian Chancery in Washington, D.C. It is called The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Black Canoe. The second casting, The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe, was unveiled at the Museum of Anthropology in 1994. During the summer of 1995, the sculpture was on display at Vancouver's Granville Island for public enjoyment and education. In its final setting, against the dramatic backdrop of the glass "Wave Wall", The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe provides the focal point to the entrance of the International Terminal.
