According to Irish/Celtic mythology, Deirdre is the foremost tragic heroine. Her tale is part of the Ulster Cycle. She was the daughter of the royal story teller Fedlimid mac Dail. It was foretold that many men would go to war over her. The king of Ulster, Conchobar, decided to bring her up in seclusion, but she eloped with Naoise, one of the sons of Usnech.The two and Naoise's brothers fled to Scotland, but Conchobar tracked them down and eventually killed the brothers. Aware that Deirdre would not love him, Conchobar gave her to the murderer of Naoise. Deirdre committed suicide. The drawing, titled "Deirdre's Lament, " is by J.H. Bacon and dates to 1905. It shows Deirdre delivering an elegy for the brothers of Usnech and those killed in her behalf.
