Bosra. Syria. View of the classical Roman theatre which is one of the largest and best preserved Roman theatres in the Mediterranean. Built in the second century AD during the reign of Trajan, the colossal scaenae frons or stage backdrop was three stories high and was adorned with ornate fine Corinthian columns, statues, and sculptured friezes - only the lower level survives today. Its cavea which is virtually intact consists of a total of 37 tiers of seating that could accommodate an audience of 9000. Bosra was briefly a Nabatean capital before becoming the prosperous and powerful capital of the Roman province of Syria. The buildings are distinguished by the black basalt found throughout the area known as the Horan region of Syria.
