The Lighthouse Hotel, Galle, Sri Lanka. Entrance staircase with Sinhalese warriors. Completed: 1997 Architect: Geoffrey Bawa. Sculptor: Laki Senanayake. One of Geoffrey Bawa's famous works of architecture. Designed to harmonize with the natural beauty of its surroundings, the Lighthouse combines a luxury hotel with an ayurvedic spa. The stairway at the hotel entrance of the Lighthouse Hotel in Galle features perhaps the most extraordinary sculpture in Sri Lanka. Senanayake's creation is a historical tableau fashioned in brass and copper that spirals up the banister towards a classic glass dome, which provides the illumination. It depicts the tale of the Battle of Randeniya of the Portugese invaders against the Sinhalese warriors with life-size horsemen and chariots in battle with their king Rajasingha playing his flute.
