The Clapham Junction rail crash occurred early on the morning of Monday 12 December 1988 when the 7.18 from Basingstoke to Waterloo, stopped to report a red signal, was hit from behind by the 6.14 from Poole that had received falsely clear signals. An empty train leaving Clapham Junction, and travelling in the opposite direction, then hit the wreckage of the Poole train. Thirty five people died in the crash and five hundred were injured. The memorial stands on Spencer Park above the site of the crash. The other side of the monument carries the following inscription: FOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN / THE CLAPHAM JUNCTION RAIL DISASTER / ON 12 DECEMBER 1988, THOSE WHO WERE / INJURED, THEIR FAMILIES, FRIENDS & ALL WHO / HELPED & CARED AT THE TIME & AFTERWARDS
