On the night of April 30th the Beltane fire festival takes place on Calton Hill Edinburgh, it is a celebration of the coming of summer and Mayday. This festival is a modern take on an ancient Celtic pagan celebration of the renewed fertility of the Earth in the coming year. The May Queen and her consort the Green Man accompanied by the White Warrior Woman and the Blue men lead a procession around the hill to various points, some of these points represent the four elements of Air, Earth, Water and Fire. The procession culminates in the rebirth of the Green Man when he is ritually killed symbolising the end of Winter. Then the May Queen brings him back to life and his old weary appearance is cast off and he is regenerated as a young man representing the rebirth of Summer.
