Ladybower Reservoir is the lowest of three Dams in the Upper Derwent Valley in Derbyshire, England. The River Ashop flows into the reservoir from the west and the River Derwent flows out at it's southern end. At it's longest point the reservoir is just over 3 miles, and at the time of construction it was the largest reservoir in Britain. Ladybower was built between 1935 and 1943 by the Derwent Valley Water Board, it took two years to completely fill the Dam, and consequently the villages of Ashopton and Derwent were flooded in the process. The dam wall was built by the Scottish company of Richard Baillie and Sons. The Ashopton Viaduct carries the A57 Snake Pass road over the reservoir and the Ladybower Viaduct carries the A6013 road over the reservoir to Bamford. The Reservoir was opened on Tuesday September 25, 1945 by King George VI accompanied by Queen Elizabeth. During the 1990s the wall was raised and strengthened to reduce the risk of water overflowing during a major flood. The Derwent Dams were also used for practice runs by the legendary Dambusters 617 squadron prior to their attacks on the Ruhr in 1943. Today the reservoir is recognised as one of the best stocked and managed Trout fisheries in the country.
