Clarendon Dock, Belfast, UK.19th September 2015. Local school children along with Queen's University Belfast, students and academics set a world record for the largest Meccano Structure in the World. Their year-long project - The Big Bridge Build - to design and build a 100 foot bridge made entirely from Meccano. The Bridge was officially opened by Meccano's new Meccanoid GS15 KS Robot! Professor Trevor Whittaker FReng, FICE, FRINA, Cend Head of School at Queens University School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering. Civil Engineers McLaughlin and Harvey provided technical support. The incredible achievement was assisted by local Belfast school children who helped construct the Meccano Bridge as part of a university outreach programme. Queen's University Belfast, hopes that sharing details of this Project will encourage more youngsters, through their love of building and construction, to engage further with the subject and explore the possibilities of civil engineering and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects at a higher level. The Big Bridge Build has already attracted attention from the engineering and architectural world including Grand Design's Kevin McCloud who said: "I was excited to see details of what must be the first life-size Meccano bridge in the world. An exemplary feat of engineering. Congratulations!" Professor Dame Athene Donald (next President British Science Association) and Lord Richard Rogers (world renowned architect) have also shared messages of support.
