Ruby Falls is a 145-foot high underground waterfall located within Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Discovered in 1928 by Leo Lambert, the waterfall has become a popular tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors each year. It is named after Lambert's wife, Ruby, and is the tallest and deepest waterfall open to the public in the United States. Situated more than 1, 100 feet below the mountain's surface, Ruby Falls is accessed via an elevator ride followed by a guided tour along a half-mile path. The tour introduces visitors to the geological formations found in the cave, such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and draperies. These structures have been created over thousands of years through the slow accumulation of minerals. Ruby Falls is open year-round, and the cave maintains a constant temperature of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit, making it an ideal attraction regardless of the season. The site also features a gift shop, dining options, and special events such as lantern tours, which provide a unique experience of exploring the cave by lantern light.
