Keukenhof, Lisse, South Holland, the Netherlands: The Keukenhof theme for 2016 is “The Golden Age”. The period in which The Netherlands went through a flourishing period in the field of trade, arts and science. This was also the period in which the world was discovered and the tulip trade thrived. The new flower bulb mosaic shows a Delft Blue cadre in which trade, shipping and Amsterdam canal houses are depicted. The mosaic measures 250 square meters and are planted in two layers with 100.000 tulips, muscari and crocus. The famous Keukenhof is a landscaped garden filled with tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, etc. in the spring season. The history of Keukenhof, the name of meaning "kitchen garden", goes back to the 15th century. Countess Jacqueline of Bavaria, Jacoba van Beieren (1401-1436) gathered fruit and vegetables from the woods and dunes for the kitchen of Teylingen Castle. Keukenhof Castle was built in 1641, and the estate grew to an area of over 200 hectares. Keukenhof is now one of the world's largest flower gardens.
