Between 1892 and 1954 over 12 million immigrants entered the United States via the Ellis Island gateway. The island was enlarged from an original 3.3 acres to 27.5 acres with the use of landfill from ships' ballast and waste rock from the construction of the new York Subway System. The island was used for the processing (medical and legal inspection) of 'steerage' or 3rd class passengers. After a major restoration starting in 1984, the main building opened to the public in 1990 as Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The Museum offers free online access to immigration records.
