The Manchester Docks, opened in 1894, closed in 1982 after the development of containerisation and the limited space on the Manchester Ship canal for increasing vessel size. In 1983 Salford Council acquired parts of the docks from the Manchester Ship Canal Company and redevelopment followed in 1985 under the Salford Quays Development Plan. The Lowry Centre named after local artist, L.S. Lowry, opened in 2000, at Pier 8 Salford Quays, at a cost of £106 million. The entrance foyer faces the public plaza, where there is large aerofoil canopy clad with perforated steel. Portrait shot through the aerofoil canopy towards the Millenium Footbridge (also known as the Lowry Footbridge), spanning the Manchester Ship Canal since 2000 and well used by people travelling between the Lowry centre and Imperial War Museum North.
