Weitere Informationen:
This bronze figural group by sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward (1830-1910) honours the esteemed clergyman, slave abolitionist and orator Henry Ward Beecher (1813-87), who took charge of the newly formed Plymouth Congregational Church, Brooklyn Heights, in 1847. The statue of the cloaked Beecher stands on a granite pedestal. Attached to the base, on the far side of the shot, an African-American girl places a palm branch. On the near side, a white boy and girl lay a garland. Beecher is depicted in pensive manner. The figures at the base symbolise his devotion to children and support of abolitionism. The statue was originally dedicated before 15, 000 people, June 24 1891, in front of Brooklyn Borough Hall. It was relocated at the north side of Columbus Plaza in 1960.
