Big Butterfly Count 2013 The big butterfly count is a nationwide survey aimed at helping assess the health of the UK environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world's biggest survey of butterflies. Almost 27, 000 people took part in 2012, counting 223, 000 individual butterflies and day-flying moths across the UK. Sir David Attenborough, President of Butterfly Conservation, Alan Titchmarsh MBE, Mike Dilger and Nick Baker, Vice Presidents of Butterfly Conservation and the actress Joanna Lumley OBE have given their enthusiastic backing to the project and support its operation. The survey is run by the charity Butterfly Conservation, in association with Marks & Spencer as part of their Plan A commitments to encourage sustainable agriculture and help to protect the environment.
