Construction of underground storm drainage works at Kings Road near the pier, Brighton, East Sussex, England, c 1995. During the 1990s a massive storm water collection drain, wide enough to drive a vehicle through, was constructed along Brighton beach, using tunnelling machines similar to those used to cut the Channel Tunnel. The aim was to stop pollution during storm conditions. Brighton and Hove has an extensive system of Victorian sewers running under the town, including emergency storm-water outfalls which could still release raw sewage until these major engineering works were completed. Where once the overflow outfall discharged directly into the sea at the end of a groyne alongside Brighton (Palace) Pier water now drops down 100 foot shaft into the new storage tunnel.
