Basalt columns on the Isle of Staffa, Scotland. Staffa gets its name from the Old Norse for stave or pillar island. The Vikings thought it reminded them of their own homes which were made of logs placed in the vertical position. Many prominent personalities have visited the island including Queen Victoria and Felix Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn's trip to Staffa, and the sight and sound of the Atlantic swell tumbling into the Cave, made a profound impression on him. He was just 20 years and based on his trip to Staffa he composed the ever-popular Hebrides Overture. Staffa is 10km or 6.2m miles west of the Isle of Mull.
