Matrimandir ('Temple of the Mother' in Sanskrit, referring to Mirra Alfassa, known as The Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram) in Auroville, Tamil Nadu. Auroville was established in 1968 as an 'experimental township' in which men and women of all nationalities, caste and creed are able to live together in harmony ('human unity'). The metal discs surrounding Matrimandir are plated in gold. It houses a meditation hall at the centre of which is the world's largest crystal, reportedly measuring 70cm across.
