Old rusty ferries connected both sides of the river on a frequent schedule for many years until mid-November of 2014 when they were replaced by three new vessels donated by the government of Japan. After decades of political isolation and economic embargo the South East Asian country which is rich in natural resources is gradually opening up and showing signs of economic and political reforms. Yet many Burmese are still hoping for greater steps towards democracy and further economic reforms after the next elections in November 2015.
