Lithograph entitled and captioned: "Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, June 1st, 1864. The Army of the Potomac advancing towards Richmond encountered the enemy entrenched at Coal Harbor, on June 1st about half past 5 AM. The order was given to charge the Rebel works, and the Union troops advanced under a heavy fire of grape and canister, driving the rebels before them and taking the position, which was firmly held in spite of the enemys (sic) desperate efforts to regain it." The Battle of Cold Harbor was fought from May 31 to June 12, 1864. It was one of the final battles of Union Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign and is remembered as one of American history's bloodiest, most lopsided battles. Thousands of Union soldiers were killed or wounded in a hopeless frontal assault against the fortified positions of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army.
