Weitere Informationen:
The A3 used to run around the rim of the Devil's Punch Bowl until the construction of the Hindhead Tunnel, a road tunnel that is part of the new Hindhead bypass. The tunnel is part of a 6.5 km (4.0 miles) dual-carriageway that replaced the last remaining stretch of single-carriageway on the London to Portsmouth road. At 1, 830 metres (1.14 miles; 6, 000 feet) in length, the tunnel is the longest non-estuarial road tunnel in the United Kingdom. It was opened by the Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond on 29 July 2011. Where the old road used to run has now been covered over and landscaped so that it reconnects the Devil's Punch Bowl with Hindhead Common and Gibbet Hill. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is managed by the National Trust.
