This is the derelict Walton lock which is located just off a spur from the Manchester ship canal in Warrington. It used to provide access via a cut to the river Mersey less than a mile west. The 'cut' is now none existent and mostly filled in behind the lock. All that remains is a small stream flowing into the Mersey. The barges Panary and Humber Trader were the last vessels to regularly use the lock up until the early 80s where they finished trading to Faircloughs mill at Bank quay. Both barges are still around today, the Panary still in active service bringing grain to Frodsham from Liverpool and Humber Trader is now a houseboat. From a personal point a view the area just above Walton lock (which joins to the ship canal) could become a good mariner for pleasure boats if the lock and cut down the the Mersey was re-instated. It would bring boat users closer into Warrington and be another point north of Fiddlers ferry, which is about the limit of navigation at the moment. I think Peel plan to put flats or apartments around this area but keep the lock intact as a feature.
