The Alhambra Gardens was the first apartment complex built in the development south of Pelham Parkway, opening in 1928. It set the tone for other apartment buildings in the neighborhood. The complex was designed by Springsteen & Goldhammer with detail work by the Hungarian Stefan S. Sajo. The apartments were targeted for upwardly mobile Eastern European Jews who had migrated from the Lower East Side to the West Bronx and were now ready for something better. The six-building, 132-unit complex featured electric refrigerators and incinerators (no ice deliveries or garbage pick-ups).
