Weitere Informationen:
The Excalibur Estate of prefabs in south London consists of 187 temporary bungalows. They were erected in 1946-47 by German and Italian prisoners of war as an interim solution to the housing shortage after the Second World War. The estate was intended to survive for 5-10 years but having lasted for over 60 years the houses are now to be demolished and the site redeveloped with houses and flats. There was a campaign by the residents to have the whole estate listed by English Heritage but this has only resulted in the listing of six of the buildings. As at January 2013 some of the prefabs are still occupied and in good condition while many are empty and boarded up or allowed to fall into disrepair.
