50s - 1950s, abandoned, Avery, Avery-Hardoll, BP, derelict, dispenser, fuel, gas Hardoll, petrol, pump. Hand operated petrol pumps were first installed commercialy around 1920 / 1921 by companies such as the Anglo - American Oil Company, Shell, and British Petroleum. Each petrol company had its own livery and branding and some of these liveries looked particularly stunning which helped to draw the motorist to their pumps. There were also various petrol pump manufacturers some of which are illustrated through their petrol pumps on this part of the Vintage Garage site. Avery-Hardoll garage petrol pumps. Garages at nighttime up and down the land would often exhibit a range of brightly illuminated petrol pump globes, advertising brands of fuel such as National Benzole, Shell, Pratts and Esso to name a few. Globes of all shapes and sizes could be seen by eagle-eyed motorists as they commuted in their cars, all designed to lure in passing car owners to a particular brand or blend of motor spirit. And it would be pumps such as those produced by Avery-Hardoll that would do the dispensing.
