The 14th July Monument in 14th July Square, opposite one of the entrances to the International (Green) Zone in Baghdad, Iraq. The square intersects Arbataash Tamuz (14th July) and Al Kindi Street in the Karkh District of west-central Baghdad. It commemorates the military coup in 1958 when Iraq's monarchy was overthrown my the military and subsequently became a republic. The statue was created by Miram Al-Sa'di and unveiled in 1963. It shows four Iraqi soldiers advancing towards the Presidential Palace and a fifth soldier fallen at their feet, symbolising how one in five soldiers died during the coup. In the background is the 14th July Bridge, open only to military traffic until October 2003. It was badly damaged in the First Gulf War in 1991.
