Sir John Franklin 1786-1849 was born in the small market town of Spilsby set at the southern end of the Lincolnshire Wolds.He was a naval officer for much of his life having joined in 1800.He fought in the sea battles of Copenhagen in 1801 and Trafalgar in1805. Franklin was also an Author and an Explorer and as a result of his explorations to Australia and later the Arctic he was Knighted in 1829. His last expedition to find the northwest passage through Arctic icefields sadly failed and his whole crew of 134 men and himself perished.The stature standing in the marketplace in Spilsby is cast in bronze and shows an anchor with rope and Sir John holding a chart case.
