This is the third church on this site. The first was founded by the Augustine Priors of Llanthony, and probably made of wood. This was demolished during the English Civil War and the materials used to fortify the garrison of Royalist soldiers in the adjacent manor house, Canon Frome Court. This garrison was attacked and defeated by Parliamentary forces under the command of Lord Leven in 1645. After the civil war, Sir Edward Hopton returned to Canon Frome and with his wife, Dame Deborah, began to rebuild the house and a new church. The church would take over two generations to complete. Only the tower of 1680 remains of this second church. The nave and the chancel were completely rebuilt in the 1860s to designs by architect George Frederick Bodley. This was one of Bodley;s first commissions under his own practice.
